I am concerned about the safety of my child. Is UNH safe?
UNH is very safe. The state of New Hampshire is rated the #1 safest state in the US, based on crime ratings. The University of New Hampshire also has security on campus as well as their own police force. In general, students say they feel safe to walk around campus at any time of the day or night.
What will my child being eating while at UNH?
UNH’s Dining Services has won 24 national awards for their dining halls, so you can feel confident that your child will eat very well while at Navitas at UNH. Students have UNLIMITED access to all 3 dining halls on campus, which offer an impressive variety of “home-cooked” style foods, salads, pizzas, soups, stir-fry and more.
How will studying at UNH help my son or daughter get a job?
UNH does a lot to prepare students for a job after college. UNH’s University Advising & Career Center (UACC) hosts 2 internship and career fairs a year and coaches students on how to write resumes, cover letters and have a successful interview. Each department on campus also helps students in finding internships and works to connect students with UNH alumni in their related field.
What kind of academic support will my child get?
Each student is provided courses specifically designed for their program of study and academic background. Students take an integrated learning skills course during their academic program, which help develop skills which will be utilized in all academic subjects to help in several areas, such as how to write a research paper and the correct citation methods required by American professors. The Navitas academic manager monitors students’ progress within the program, and if any students are finding a particular subject(s) challenging then a meeting will be held. The academic manager will suggest a course of action for the student, and potentially offer specific tutoring provided within the Navitas program.
What happens if my child gets sick?
UNH has a dedicated Health Centre directly on campus. If students are ill and need attention they can visit the Health services facility during hours of operation and be seen by a nurse or Doctor. If there is a serious emergency that needs immediate medical attention students are advised to call the emergency services number (999). Students are required to purchase the universities health insurance, so the majority of medical expenses will be covered under this policy.
Will my child have access to the university facilities?
All Navitas students are university students from day one, this means all the amenities and facilities on campus that are available to domestic students are available to your child. Such facilities may include, but are not limited to, the libraries, the gym, the dining facilities, transportation services, and many more.
How much time will my child spend in class?
Students typically spend 12-16 hours per week in class, depending on their major of study. Students pick their own class schedule during the orientation week, and can choose between a selection of morning, afternoon and even night classes.
Where will my child live?
All students are guaranteed on campus accommodation. Students will be living in dorms that are predominantly American students. Students will generally have one roommate which may be another international student or an American student. In general, Navitas students are surrounded by other American students—in the dorms, in the dining halls and in student activities. UNH provides a great environment for students work on their English and become immersed in American culture.
Will they be able to get a job?
It is advised students concentrate on their academic studies in the first year to make sure they achieve the desired GPA required for their program of study. However Students can work 20 hours per week on campus when classes are in session. When the university has holidays or break students can work up to 40 hours per week on campus. Many students gain jobs in the libraries’, dining halls or computer laboratories.
Is my child guaranteed entry to UNH?
Entry to second year is guaranteed if students meet the academic entry criteria for their particular major of study. Students need to achieve a 3.0 GPA in Engineering and Business, and Liberal Arts students need to obtain a 2.5 GPA in the Navitas program to progress to year 2 of the bachelor’s degree at UNH.
